Thank you for the reply. We will still be here ready to support your efforts.
I agree with what Zombra posted. Wizardry 8 should be the blueprint to follow for party member personalities. Well worth firing up the game, to see how the various character types would respond with comments to a wide range of situations and events.
Interesting feedback. I would have thought the general premise was the party winning their freedom from the oath and obligations of the Empire. Then again, it’s still early, and maybe the developers don’t want to leak too much narrative information.
Bard’s Tale IV kickstarter is live. You guys should give a shout out and keep up your visibility.
Character development/advancement is the heart and soul of a role-playing game, and XP is the currency to achieve that. I prefer a system that handles experience points the way it is tradtionally done, awarding the bonus for various means of accomplishing an objective from solving riddles, picking locks, and including combat.
As far as combat specifically, I think it matters if the Seven Dragon Saga ruleset assigns an XP value to its creatures and characters. How much is defeating a kobold worth, versus an ogre versus an elemental, and so on.
Digitally Downloaded posted a very good interview with David Shelley. You guys should get that posted on your facebook page, and maybe in the news section.
I like those for an Overland map. In fact, when Obsidian did theirs for SoZ, along with the smaller minimilist towns (ony few locations accesible through a context menu), they were borrowing heavily from the Gold Box games.
It is interesting to see where modern developers were influenced by SSI, and now the original designers get to showcase their own vision based on systems they are familiar with.
Obviously the closer Seven Dragon Saga can get to the Gold Box standard, the better, as far as I’m concerned.
I have no problem going with the Dark Sun approach. They were both excellent games. But fans of the Gold Box series will need to temper their expectations, moving forward. We’re all just itching for the next round of details and information!
I hope non-combat opportunities includes how exploration is handled. This includes the first person window, as well as overland map travel. Both are distinctive to the old Gold Box experience. There has been a bit of a let down in expectations when it was dropped that exploration will be in 3rd person. I don’t know if that is decision based on commercial viability and making something that would appeal to a modern audience. Might & Magic X used the Unity engine and was a first-person perspective dungeon crawler. Grimrock was also first person. A lot of folks would be pleased with that mode, and then switching to top down turn-based combat like Divinity: Original Sin. Just to use a couple of recent RPG releases as a reference.
Something to consider.
Another curiosity with regard to Pools of Darkness. The use of the marilith Kalistes and the spider dimension. It seemed like such an obvious case of “not-Lloth”. Was there also a restriction imposed by TSR not to kill off their legendary monsters?
From the background information I read about the SDS pen and paper system, it looked interesting. I would like to see those mechanics implemented in the cRPG version. Looking forward to hear more about the lore/setting.
The Gold Box engine is iconic, there hasn’t been anything like it since. Let’s hope the developers sieze the opportunity to re-create something magical.
