Greeting from a backer!
1. There seem to be some slightly edited unity store assets in the demo that was used to create the kickstarter video. Is this indicative of the final result or will they be replaced with something more unique?2. Your goal of $450.000 seems low compared to kickstarters of (seemingly) similar scope:
Wasteland 2
Pillars of Eternity
Have I misunderstood your intended scope for the game or is there some other reason why you need less money?3. The kickstarter pitch doesn’t mention the gold box games much, yet they are undoubtedly the most famous series from SSI. In contrast to this, Seven Dragon Saga doesn’t share many obvious traits from the gold box games, such as no First person perspective exploration versus top-down combat, no vancian magic, no tiles etc.
I’d be interested in some thoughts from the SSI veterans on why these choices were made. Basically what makes a designer choose one design over another.
March 18, 2015 at 8:29 pm #775Thank heavens they aren’t using Vancian magic. That’s a D&D albatross no game should have hanging around its neck. I for one am delighted that they’re not lumbering themselves with the D&D system. Good riddance.
March 18, 2015 at 10:15 pm #779Regarding the lack of first-person exploration the official response on the Kickstarter comments section was:
Too many different views is challenging. We’re really making an effort to streamline and be efficient with some of our design decisions.
Perhaps it is challenging, but not going that way is unfortunate, in my opinion. What people want most is a game that brings the Gold Box experience to modern technology, and part of that experience is the 1st-person exploration – switching to overhead view for combat.
Also consider that there is another game out there which is doing exactly this, on a fraction of the budget that SDS is seeking.

We have referenced that the graphics are not indicative of final quality, but they should be on par with games like Wasteland 2.
We are consciously creating a setting that isn’t straight Tolkien/AD&D vanilla fantasy. Although, we have a lot of fondness for those setting/rules this is a fresh IP and and we’re trying to take the best aspects forward. Backer feedback will be used throughout the development process.

In your opinion. Which is wrong.
March 23, 2015 at 1:52 am #795Perhaps – but it seems the devs agree with me. 😀
If you want Vancian magic in 7DS, bug them about it.
March 24, 2015 at 12:45 am #800I didn’t mind the Vancian Magic concept. But it is deeply flawed. It tended to remove choice, because you would never use any of the “other” spells because you couldn’t afford to waste a spell “slot”.
March 24, 2015 at 4:13 am #806Exactly. It’s fine for stories, not so much for games.
